Oven Calibration
Question:
My oven seems to either under-cook or over-cook food when I'm baking or roasting. I have tried adjusting the time upper or lower with limited results. Is it time to purchase a new oven?
Answer:
Chances are your oven only needs the temperature settings to be recalibrated. Unknown to most homeowners, there is a simple method for fine tuning the oven temperatures. First, you need to visit your local hardware store or appliance outlet and purchase an 'Oven Thermometer.' This is a specific device designed to independently meter the oven temperatures. Following the instructions outlined on the package, adjust your calibration setting accordingly. Generally, if you have a newer oven with an electronic display, you will need to remove the display housing to reach the calibration spindle. For higher temperatures, turn clockwise. For lower temperatures, turn counter-clockwise. If, you have an older model oven, remove the temperature setting knob. Located on either side of the spindle should be two smaller spindles or screws. Turn the right to raise the temperature setting, turn the left to lower. Following the instructions on the package test and review the thermometer periodically until the oven thermometer matches the pre-set temperature. If, after this you still experience problems contact a trained technician. Chances are fifty-fifty that your oven is okay. If so, you have just saved yourself hundreds of dollars!
