Question:
Rexcently I received a flier on my front door detailing information regarding the Federal Pacific Electric Circuit Breakers and the need to have them replaced if I own one of them. What's the story?
Answer:
During tough economic times pople will go to great lenths to misinform the public all in the vain hopes of having you pay for something you don't necessarily need. During the 1980's numerous homes were built utiliting circuit breakers constructed by a company named Federal Pacific Electric. Most often, electricians falsly mislead consumers into thinking that these circuit breaker panels were recalled and are dangerous. Therefore, they say. If you have one it should be replaced immediately. All to the tune of approcimately $1250.00 or above to the homeowner. However, here is the misleading part. Although, it is true the company filed for bankruptcy in 1989 and is no longer in business. Although, a select number of circuit breakers were later recalled this is where the story ends. First, residential models of these circuit breakers were never recalled, nor were they deemd dangerous. The models that were recalled dealt expressly with commercial grade breakers, not residential. Chances are an inspection of one of these panels may indicate that a breaker switch (individually) may need to be replaced (Approcimately $60.00).
